Hearing the words “you have cancer” can feel like the ground has shifted beneath you. Even before treatment begins, many people experience fear, worry, sadness, or a sense of being overwhelmed. Appointments, test results, side effects, and changes to daily life can take an emotional toll. While family and friend support is incredibly important, it’s okay to need more. Taking care of your mental and emotional health is a meaningful part of healing.
At Karmanos Cancer Institute locations across McLaren Health Care, cancer care is about more than treating the disease. It’s about caring for the whole person—mind, body and spirit. That’s why a wide range of free support services is available to patients, survivors, caregivers, and loved ones, whenever support is needed most.
Counseling Services
Sometimes it helps to talk with someone who understands what you’re going through. Karmanos and McLaren offer counseling services that provide a safe, supportive space to process emotions, manage stress, and cope with life during and after cancer treatment. Genetic counseling is also available for patients and family members who want to understand their cancer risk better and make informed decisions. Nutritional counseling helps patients feel more confident about eating well and staying strong throughout treatment.
Support Groups
Cancer can feel isolating, but you don’t have to go through it alone. Support groups across the Karmanos Cancer Network bring together people who understand the challenges firsthand. Sharing stories, listening to others and learning together can offer comfort, connection and reassurance that your feelings are valid and shared.

Spiritual Care
For many people, faith and spirituality provide strength during difficult times. Karmanos and McLaren’s spiritual care services offer compassionate support through chaplains and volunteers from a variety of faith traditions. Whether you’re celebrating good news, struggling with uncertainty, or simply want someone to listen, spiritual care providers are there to support you and your family.
Integrative Therapies and Services
Healing can also happen in creative and calming ways. Integrative therapies such as art therapy, massage, yoga, music therapy, and Reiki help reduce stress and anxiety while promoting relaxation and well-being. These services are offered in both group and one-on-one settings, allowing patients to choose what feels right for them.
