Are You at Risk for Lung Cancer?

Lung cancer is the second most common type of cancer and the leading cause of cancer death in the U.S. However, lung cancer is also one of the most preventable cancers. Cancer often develops in the lungs from breathing in toxic chemicals. The number one cause of inhaling toxic chemicals is smoking. For smokers, the best way to prevent the disease is to quit. Annual lung cancer screenings are a way to reduce the risk of dying from lung cancer.

Talk to your doctor to discuss your chances of developing lung cancer. Those who are at an increased risk of lung cancer are:

  • 50 - 80 years old
  • Have a cough that does not go away, hoarseness, shortness of breath, etc.
  • A current or former smoker with at least a 20 pack-year smoking history (one pack a day for 20 years or two packs a day for 10 years)
  • A current smoker or those who have quit within the last 15 years.
  • You must have a prescription for a screening from your doctor before scheduling. Please talk to your doctor if you think you are eligible.

low dose ct-scan lung cancer screening

Lung Cancer Screening and Treatment Program Highlights

McLaren Oakland and the Karmanos Cancer Institute at Clarkston, Michigan, maintain a high-volume lung cancer screening and treatment program that includes Low Dose CT-Scan (LDCT), Robotic Bronchoscopy and advanced surgical procedures.

Low Dose CT-Scan (LDCT) for Lung Cancer Screening
A lung cancer screening trial sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) showed that participants who were screened with spiral CT scans had about a 20% lower risk of dying from lung cancer than those who were screened with chest x-rays.

Robotic Bronchoscopy for Diagnosing Lung Cancer
A bronchoscopy use a scope to look at all areas of the lungs and will obtain specimens and biopsies for laboratory analysis to help diagnose any lung condition that may be present. Compared to traditional bronchoscopy, this robotic bronchoscopy provides our clinicians with improved precision and control. Combining traditional camera views into the lung with computer assisted navigation based on 3-D models of the patient’s own lung anatomy, the technology used, the Monarch platform, provides bronchoscopic visualization throughout the procedure. The technology can potentially aid in the diagnosis of small hard-to reach lung nodules.
