Planning Ahead: Jo and Ed Fredericks Scholarship Fund

A hospital may be new, high tech, and efficient, but it will fail in its responsibility to the community if it is not staffed by the best and brightest we can find.

Joanne “Jo” Fredericks of Mason wrote those words of wisdom in an email to the McLaren Greater Lansing Foundation earlier this year and they give some insight into why she and her husband Ed have named the Foundation as the beneficiary of a $500,000 life insurance policy.

Jo had a variety of jobs during a 25-year career at McLaren Greater Lansing and its corporate office in Flint. She concluded during those years that the “strength of the organization is its people.” That’s why proceeds from the couple’s life insurance policy will support the Jo and Ed Fredericks Scholarship Fund which will provide grants to local high school and college students interested in pursuing a degree in the health care field. Not all of those recipients are expected to end up working at McLaren Greater Lansing, but the education and training they receive will give them the tools to excel in their job, wherever it might be.

“We are incredibly grateful for the Fredericks’ generosity,” said Lynn Griffor, executive director of the Foundation. “Their planned gift will have an incredible impact on the lives of so many students for years and years to come.”
