Gail Grunkemeyer, BSN, RN, OCN, staff nurse, 8 Webber North, has been named the first ever Karmanos Cancer Institute DAISY Award recipient for her exceptional care.
A family member of a patient nominated Gail for the honor.
The nominator wrote, “We truly appreciate all the time and effort Gail put in to support our family. While those all seem like routine activities and interventions, it is all in the delivery. It is not what you say; it is how you say it. It is not what you do; it is how you do it. Gail is a wonderful patient and family advocate who exemplifies excellence and professionalism.”
The DAISY Award was established by the DAISY Foundation in memory of J. Patrick Barnes who died at 33 of ITP, an autoimmune disease. The Barnes Family was awestruck by the clinical skills, caring and compassion of the nurses who cared for Patrick, so they created this national award to say thank you to nurses everywhere. More than 3,500 health care facilities and schools of nursing in all 50 states and 21 other countries participate. More than 100,000 nurses having received this recognition.
