Since first opening in June of 1994, McLaren Bay Special Care has celebrated 25 years of providing high quality long-term acute care to our community.
A 31-bed long-term acute care hospital, McLaren Bay Special Care specializes in the care and treatment of patients with complex medical needs, including a ventilator weaning program, that require lengths of stay greater than 25 days. The experienced staff are trained to use a team approach to provide intensive, individualized treatment. The hospital is licensed by the Michigan Department of Community Health and is accredited by The Joint Commission.
“As a long-term care hospital, McLaren Bay Special Care sees only the most complicated patients,” said Janet Sutton, DO, Medical Director of McLaren Bay Special Care. “Being in the hospital such a long time is very hard, but our patients show amazing determination to recover.”
The staff is dedicated to making the hospital comfortable and homey for its patients. An elaborate outdoor gazebo at the hospital’s entrance is a favorite visiting place for all patients, whether they’re in a wheelchair, walker or hospital bed. The gazebo and reflection garden were part of a $1.2 million renovation and expansion in 2009, which also included the renovation of 29 private rooms, furnishings and décor.
Patients admitted to McLaren Bay Special Care are usually too ill to utilize other types of care. They may require a doctor’s care every day, or may need rehabilitation at a slower pace. Long-term acute care hospitals (LTACHs) offer intense medical interventions such as:
- Ventilator weaning
- Tracheostomy-complex COPD care
- Cardiac monitoring/telemetry
- On-site radiation oncology
- On-site hemodialysis
- Complex wound management
- Long-term IV antibiotics
- Complex orthopedics
“The success of McLaren Bay Special Care is carried by our staff,” said Monica Baranski, President of McLaren Bay Special Care. “Our patients are loved by our staff, and the patients love them in return. When patients first come in they are often very sick, but as they recover they become our family.”
Patients and families can feel the difference. “My husband was at McLaren Bay Special Care for three months, and passed away in April of 2018,” said Barb Andres of Mt. Pleasant. “I can’t say enough good about the care he received. We wish he had been home, but if he had to be somewhere, this was excellent.”
