McLaren Caro Region Offers a Free Blood Pressure Screenings in Recognition of American Heart Month

In recognition of American Heart Month, McLaren Caro Region is offering a free blood pressure screening on Wednesday, February 23 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the hospital's front lobby.

A high blood pressure left untreated can lead to health conditions such as stroke and heart disease. The term “heart disease” refers to several types of heart conditions. The most common type is coronary artery disease, which affects the blood flow to the heart.

Pre-registration is not required to participate in the blood pressure screening. Participants will be asked to fill out a form at the time of the screening. McLaren Caro Region Hospital is located at 401 N. Hooper St., Caro, MI 48723.

Prior to your blood pressure screening, McLaren Caro Region recommends these tips for the most accurate results:

  • Fast for 30 minutes prior to your screening, avoid alcohol or caffeine during the fast as well
  • Be sure to empty your bladder before you screen your blood pressure
  • While waiting, find a chair with back support to sit in for at least 5 minutes before your screening
  • While sitting, before and during your screening, have both feet flat on the floor, be sure to keep your legs uncrossed
  • Rest your arm on a table at chest height during the screening
  • Avoid talking while your blood pressure is being measured
Registered nurse and supervisor of patient care services, Wendy Werner, says blood pressure has a large impact on a patient's health and should be tested regularly.

"It's important to regularly have your blood pressure tested because there are often no symptoms associated with a high blood pressure until it shows as something serious," said Wendy Werner, RN. "It's a quick and easy test, but very important. Being aware of your blood pressure and having an accurate test allows the patient and doctor a clearer insight to any risk of heart disease or other potentially serious health issues."
