McLaren Caro Region Senior Life Solutions Raising Awareness During National Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month

National Suicide Prevention and Awareness

September is National Suicide Prevention and Awareness month and McLaren Caro Region Senior Life Solutions is working to raise awareness. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, 129 deaths by suicide occur per day on average and there are an estimated 1,400,000 attempted suicides per year. Talk of suicide should never be dismissed. If you or someone you know is thinking of suicide, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.

Senior Life Solutions provides life-changing, round-the-clock care for older adults struggling with depression, anxiety, mood disorders, memory problems, post-traumatic stress disorder, and other mental illnesses. The staff are trained in the use of standardized, evidence-based tools for screening patients at risk of suicide. In addition, the staff assists the patient to create a plan to prevent future suicide attempts or suicidal thoughts.

"It is so important we raise awareness on the warning signs of suicide and talk about the importance of emotional well-being in our community. Our program is designed to improve the quality of life for our patients, and if we can help other community members, families, or caregivers along the way then we are doing our job,” stated Tera Boatright, Patient Coordinator.

Referrals to the program can be made by anyone, including a patient’s physician, family member, self-referral, or another healthcare professional.

Senior Life Solutions will also be hosting a Candlelight Vigil to help raise awareness. Join them on Thursday, September 26, 2019 at 7:30 pm to show support for suicide prevention, remember lost loved ones, and support the survivors.
