Nonagenarian Nurse Aide Ruby Gill Selected as McLaren Flint's December Outstanding Employee of the Month

McLaren Flint honored an extraordinary employee on Thursday, December 15 whom staff throughout the hospital know as Miss Ruby. Her full name is Ruby Gill and although her surgical services co-workers just helped her celebrate her 90th birthday last week, she isn’t ready to retire anytime soon. Fast forward a week and she has received the December Outstanding Employee of the Month award from hospital leadership and the award selection committee.

Known for being dependable, hard-working, and beloved by patients and co-workers alike, Ruby simply loves what she does and gives it her all. She has been at McLaren Flint since March 1983. Ruby is currently a Nurse Aide II and helps stock needed items in the pre-op and recovery areas as well as the surgical nurses’ stations. When she is not doing that, she is busy transporting surgical patients to different inpatient units, retrieving surgical beds from inpatient units, or comforting patients at the bedside. She is a true inspiration to many.

When asked why she continues to work Ruby replied, “I just can’t sit, I’ve been that way since I was a child.”

When asked why she loves what she does Ruby replied, “Helping someone else helps me, it’s a blessing to me.”

Ruby lives by the motto, “May the work I’ve done speak for me.”

The Outstanding Employee of the Month candidates are nominated by managers, directors, and McLaren Flint’s executive leadership team. Criteria for nomination are based on the hospital’s mission and core values: contribution to culture and core values, teamwork, going the extra mile, outstanding patient service, performance excellence, and commitment.
