State-of-the-Art 3D Mammography

Now Offered at McLaren Northern Michigan

McLaren Northern Michigan is excited to offer 3D Mammography in Petoskey. Utilizing advanced breast tomosynthesis technology, the new exam is clinically proven to significantly increase the detection of breast cancers by 41 percent.

In conventional 2D Mammography, overlapping tissue is a leading reason why small breast cancers may be missed and normal tissue may appear abnormal, leading to callbacks. With the new three-dimensional method of imaging, callbacks for tissue overlap are reduced by 40 percent.

During a 3D mammography exam, 2D images and tomosynthesis scans are completed. Then, an X-ray arm sweeps in a slight arc over the breast, taking multiple images. A computer then converts the images into a stack of thin layers, allowing the radiologist to review the breast tissue one layer at a time.

“3D mammography provides our patients with the clarity needed to more accurately detect breast cancer,” stated Nel Go, MD, radiologist at McLaren Northern Michigan. “Additionally, we have the SmartCurve compression paddle to give increased comfort to our mammography patients.”

Many thanks to generous donors to the McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation. Your contributions have helped fund this and many other needs for our Breast Health services. Northern Michigan residents are grateful for your support.
