Two Karmanos behavioral health specialists named Notable Leaders by Crain’s Detroit Business

The 2023 list of Crain’s Notable Leaders in Behavioral Health contains two members of Karmanos’ Supportive Oncology Multidisciplinary Team (MDT): Felicity W.K. Harper, Ph.D., and Mary Morreale, M.D. The publication announced the list on Monday, May 22.

Dr. Harper is a clinical psychologist, professor of oncology at Wayne State University (WSU) School of Medicine, and associate center director of Population Sciences at Karmanos. She has dedicated her leadership, research and clinical practice to improving all cancer patients' care and outcomes, but most critically among under-served patient groups. At Karmanos, Dr. Harper also looks to increase the reach and impact of behavioral and epidemiological cancer research in Southeast Michigan and throughout the catchment area of the McLaren Health Care system. She and her team work closely with patients, physicians and community stakeholders to design, test and implement evidence-based interventions to improve the quality of care and outcomes for cancer patients, with an emphasis on reducing racial, ethnic and other disparities in cancer care.

Dr. Morreale is the chief of psychiatry at Karmanos, a professor in WSU’s Department of Psychiatry, and director of medical student education at the School of Medicine. She is deeply interested in caring for vulnerable individuals facing a cancer diagnosis and has developed robust outpatient and inpatient consult services for Karmanos. Dr. Morreale is in the process of creating a space for healthcare providers to openly discuss their social and emotional issues with their colleagues about caring for patients and families. She also enjoys serving as a faculty member for the WSU School of Medicine Gold Humanism Honor Society, a group of students and physicians recognized for their compassionate care and who support the importance of human connection in healthcare.

Both Drs. Harper and Morreale assist Karmanos patients and their families through their cancer journey by helping them understand their feelings and cope with their diagnosis. They mentor medical and graduate students, fellows, physicians and other leaders, and have collaborated on multiple peer-reviewed publications with mentees and colleagues alike. The naming of both Drs. Harper and Morreale to the Crain’s Notable Leaders in Behavioral Health list is well deserved.
