Dr. Michael DiGiovanni is a family medicine provider serving the community of Brown City. Dr. DiGiovanni graduated from Saint James School of Medicine in The Quarter, Anguilla, and received his residency training from Decatur Memorial Hospital in Decatur, Illinois. One way to maintain a healthy A1C (a measure of a person’s blood sugar levels from the previous two to three months) is by eating a low-carb diet.

Carbs from food are the body's primary source of glucose. When consumed, they are broken down into sugars that enter the bloodstream. In individuals with diabetes, either the body doesn't produce enough insulin (Type 1), or it becomes resistant to its effects (Type 2), leading to elevated blood sugar. By restricting carbohydrates, the body relies more on fat for energy, resulting in smaller increases in blood glucose after meals.

“When adopting a low-carb diet it is best to avoid sugary beverages, bread, sweets, fruits, and starchy vegetables,” says Dr. Michael DiGiovanni, a family medicine physician at McLaren Lapeer. “Aim to eat more protein and healthy fats such as non-starchy vegetables, fish, poultry, lean meat, eggs, olive oil, avocados, nuts and seeds.”
