McLaren Central Michigan receives eighth consecutive ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade

For the eighth consecutive time, McLaren Central Michigan (MCM) received an “A” Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade for achieving the highest national standards in patient safety. MCM has consistently received an “A” grade since Fall 2018. Only 8.9% of hospitals have achieved this. The Leapfrog Group announced their Spring 2022 grades publicly on May 10, 2022.

The Leapfrog Group, an independent national watchdog organization, awards an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D,” or “F” grade to all general hospitals across the country. The grade uses over 30 measures of safety data including rates of preventable errors, injuries and infections, while also accounting for whether hospitals have systems in place to protect patients from harm.

“This eighth ‘A’ is a testament to the level of care and commitment our staff provides here at McLaren Central Michigan,” said Robert G. David, MCM’s president and CEO. “We are committed to providing the highest level of quality care to our community and this achievement is another recognition of that.”

Other quality acknowledgements McLaren Central Michigan has received include:

  • 5-star quality rating by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services,
  • Hospital Patient Safety Recognition 2021 Excellence Award by the Economic Alliance for Michigan,
  • the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Hospital Accreditation in 2019,
  • the Governor’s Award of Excellence for 2017 and 2019, and
  • Top 100 Rural & Community Hospitals in the United States by The Chartis Center for Rural Health in 2019.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospital prevention of medical errors and harms to patients. The grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.

“’Straight As’ is an incredibly difficult distinction to achieve, and one of which this community should be tremendously proud. McLaren Central Michigan has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to protecting patients from preventable harm,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “The leadership and workforce of McLaren Central Michigan deserve to be commended for this excellence in patient safety despite the continued challenges to our health care system.”
