Valencia Garza, emergency medicine technician at McLaren Greater Lansing, has been recognized as one of the Lansing Latino Health Alliance’s 2023 Outstanding Hispanic/Latino Caregivers. The award was presented to Garza, among McLaren leadership and coworkers, along with her family and friends, at the Lansing Latino Health Alliance ceremony on Tuesday, March 19, 2024.
This award is given annually to a caregiver who has made a significant impact in the life of a patient, exceeded expectations in carrying out their responsibilities, and demonstrated exceptional professionalism in the workplace. Garza was nominated for the award by her co-workers, recognizing her outstanding achievements in these areas.
Garza has worked in health care for more than 12 years, and with McLaren for the last six years, and is currently working in the emergency department. She provides care and comfort for patients who are often in a sensitive emotional and mental situation, during what can be a frightening time for them. It was her intense desire to help others during their time of need that drove her to a career in health care, through which she validates her deep dedication by putting the needs of her patients first and foremost.
“My aunt was a nurse, and so learning about the health care field from her, I decided this was the career path for me. So I started working in nursing homes, and then later wanted to learn and do more so I came to McLaren,” said Garza. “It’s an honor for me to be able to provide support for my patients and advocate for them to receive the care they require to heal.”
Garza’s co-workers describe her as an exemplary and compassionate caregiver who gives patients the space and empathy they need to adjust during a difficult time in their life, listening carefully and striving to make them feel comfortable.
Garza grew up in the Lansing area and is proud to continue to support her community through her career and passion for others.
“I am so thankful to be recognized for this award and appreciate the nomination and support I have received from my community and co-workers,” said Garza. “There are so many career paths in health care that can make a difference in people’s lives, and I hope to help expand that communication out to our future workers.”

The Lansing Latino Health Alliance was founded as an advocacy organization in 2003 with the mission of raising the health status of Latinos in the greater Lansing area. Since 2003, the Alliance has informed the community and policymakers of health discrepancies and health needs of Latinos, advocated for change and improvement, and testified before legislative committees on these issues. The Alliance regularly collaborates with Lansing hospitals on various projects.
