Mental Health Awareness Month

Counselor and patient meeting.

In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, we wanted to highlight the importance of mental wellbeing in our community. Mental health is a pressing issue in the United States, with a significant portion of the population experiencing various degrees of mental illnesses.

Understanding the current landscape of mental health can help in addressing these challenges and promoting the importance of seeking help.

  • Nearly 60 million adults (one in four) experienced mental illness in 2024, with 13 million having serious thoughts of suicide.

  • Many individuals face multiple mental disorders simultaneously, particularly depressive illnesses alongside substance use and anxiety disorders.

  • Approximately 18% of adults ages 18-54 have anxiety disorders, impacting 42.5 million Americans annually.

  • Around 9.5% of adults experience depressive disorders (major depression, bipolar disorder, dysthymia) each year.

  • By mid-2025, 33% of Americans will have made mental health resolutions, up 5% from the previous year. Younger adults are leading the way in embracing therapy and self-care.

  • Despite the high prevalence of mental illness (57.8 million adults, or 19% of the population), only 43% receive mental health care.

Remember, you are not alone! McLaren Bay Region offers comprehensive behavioral health services, including an inpatient, partial hospitalization program (PHP), and a treatment-resistant depression (TRD) clinic to support those in need.
