McLaren Health Care Earns 2 ‘A’s in Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade

Two hospitals part of statewide McLaren Health Care have earned an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, a national distinction that recognizes the hospital’s achievements in protecting patients from harm while providing safe, compassionate health care.

McLaren Central Michigan in Mount Pleasant and McLaren Northern Michigan in Petoskey both earned ‘A’ grades.

The highest achievable recognition, grades are assigned based on a hospital’s performance in preventing medical errors, injuries, accidents, infections, and other harm to patients in their care, as well as patient experience.

“Foremost, my congratulations to the teams at McLaren Central Michigan and McLaren Northern Michigan,” said Dr. Justin Klamerus, McLaren Health Care Executive Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer.

He continued, “While grades were largely maintained from the spring, our system and hospital-based medical leadership continue to take an active, frontline approach to hardwiring initiatives that enhance patient safety and care quality every day. Using the McLaren Patient Safety Dashboard, our systemwide and hospital-based clinical leaders can track key quality and safety measures in near real time, allowing us to see the steady, continuous progress being made across multiple areas — improvements that will be reflective in future grades. Creating and ensuring a safe environment of care requires diligence, teamwork, and attention to detail, and it is a top priority and a responsibility we do not take lightly. My congratulations to the teams at McLaren Northern/Central Michigan.”

A trusted and influential patient guide, the Leapfrog Group uses publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to hospitals twice a year. The methodology is peer-reviewed, and the resulting grades are provided to the public free of charge.
