McLaren Flint Expands ER Care, Adds Emergency Medicine Residency Program

McLaren Flint, part of statewide McLaren Health Care and its extensive Graduate Medical Education department, has expanded its hospital-based GME training program with the addition of an emergency medicine residency.

The hospital received approval from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education to add the specialty training program along with 24 resident physicians to its already robust roster of established training programs, which include family medicine, anesthesia, internal medicine, and orthopedic surgery residencies, along with fellowships in vascular surgery, interventional cardiology, and cardiovascular disease, pulmonary and critical care, among other fellowships.

The program’s inaugural emergency medicine residency class will join the hospital at the start of the new academic year on July 1, 2026.

“Adding emergency medicine to our GME program further strengthens our ability to develop and train new physicians as well as establish a connection between them and our community,” said Chris Candela, McLaren Flint President and CEO. “By expanding the program, we are further investing in both the high-quality care our patients receive today as well as in the future health and wellness for our region.”

Dr. Nikhil Mohan will lead the program as its Program Director, with Dr. Christy Rotondo serving as Associate Program Director. Additional GME core faculty include Dr. Emily Bon, Dr. Raymond Rudoni, Dr. Crystal Arthur, Dr. Rahul Mehta, Dr. John Rotondo, and Dr. Robert Schulz.

Residents will treat patients alongside attending physicians in the McLaren Flint Emergency and Trauma Center.

Accreditation of this program to the hospital’s GME offering included a lengthy application process including a site visit from ACGME representatives to review facilities, interview faculty, and review the program’s proposed curriculum.

“We are very pleased to introduce this program and welcome the first class of emergency medicine residents to an exceptional facility and receive hands-on experience and invaluable knowledge to help lay the foundation of their careers,” said Erin Reis, Ed.D., Associate Chief Academic Officer for McLaren Health Care. “Earning and adding this accreditation has been a long journey, and it was only made possible due to present and steady leadership and support from both the McLaren Flint medical staff and hospital leadership.”

A three-year program, 8 emergency medicine residents will be added each year, reaching its full maturation in 2028 with 24 residents.
