Stroke Screenings-In early 2022 A goal five years in the making finally became a reality for McLaren Flint’s neurosciences team member Ashley Yotkois, NP, RN, BSN. She turned her passion for teaching people stroke risk factors and the signs and symptoms of a stroke into a comprehensive outreach effort.

McLaren Flint’s stroke center partnered with other health care providers and the Genesee County Free Medical Clinic to form the Flint Stroke Coalition, which offers free monthly stroke screenings to the community. The stroke screenings not only screen for stroke but also help to identify other health concerns and provide residents with a chance to ask a clinician any questions they may have. The screenings include diabetes screening, Hemoglobin A1C, full lipid panel including total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, and triglycerides, blood pressure and pulse, sleep disorder risk assessment, risk-reduction plan and results counseling and education. They are held the fourth Thursday of the month (except November) from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Genesee Country Free Medical Clinic located at 2437 Welch Boulevard in Flint.

Funding from the Community Foundation of Greater Flint made possible by the Foundation’s Compassionate Living Fund, Arthur L. Tuuri Health Fund, and Healthy Youth/Healthy Seniors Fund help support the screenings. The Shori and Pervin Majjhoo Neuroscience Fund, overseen by the McLaren Flint Foundation and established in 2020 by McLaren Flint interventional neurologists Dr. Aniel Majjhoo, Dr. Mahmoud Rayes, and Dr. Bharath Naravetla, also supports this monthly outreach effort.
