Moms' Suggestions Inspire Kids to Join Work Family

Kerri Murray’s been at McLaren Flint since her daughter Melanie was born.

A couple of years ago, when Melanie was graduating from high school, she wasn’t sure what she wanted to do, but she did know her mom really liked her job. At mom’s suggestion, Melanie looked to see if there was something of interest and decided to apply for a business office coordinator position at McLaren Flint MRI. She got the job. That was two-and-a-half years ago.

“I didn’t know if I wanted to work with patients or not, but now I know I do,” said Melanie. “I see how I can help them in my current role, and when I decide what imaging field I want to pursue.”

Kerri’s role for the past several years has been in Human Resources.

“Melanie and I both like to help people and make their day better; it brings us joy,” said Kerri.

Because they aren’t in the same building where they can run into each other, Mom may just pack a lunch for her daughter every so often to get her to swing by for a quick in-person encounter.

“I don’t know where I’d be without my mom, I’m glad I’m her daughter,” added Melanie.

Tiffany Castro is a mother of three, and two of her children are working at the hospital.

Daughter Nicole is in Nutritional Services, and son Aidan is in Security.

“I really like the patients,” said Nicole. She also likes to tease her younger brother if she runs into him. She is on first shift and he’s on second.

“I wanted to do something in law enforcement, so this is a great start for me,” said Aidan. “I also like the people I work with.”

Both say their mom is always there when they need her.

“I told them there are opportunities here for them,” said Tiffany. “I’m glad they both found something. They can progress within the hospital and even the corporation if they want to. I love that my kids are here with me.”
