Remembering a Family Medicine Resident and Her Call for Equality in COVID-19 Care

McLaren Flint is mourning the loss of Susan Moore, MD, a former Family Medicine resident who passed away in Indiana from COVID-19. Dr. Moore, who was a McLaren Flint resident from 2003 to 2006, made national news in December by documenting her COVID-19 experiences at two Indiana hospitals. Through social and traditional media, Dr. Moore raised questions about the racial disparities she faced as a black patient throughout her journey, which unfortunately ended with her untimely passing on December 20 in Indiana.

Dr. Moore’s story is a somber reminder of the work still needed to eliminate racial disparities in healthcare in the United States. Equality of care is a principal McLaren Health Care strongly supports and is one of the areas of focus for McLaren Flint’s Diversity & Inclusion Committee, chaired by Nicole Franklin, PsyD, Assistant Medical Director of the McLaren Bariatric and Metabolic Institute.

More information about diversity and inclusion efforts will be coming out in the new year. All team members are encouraged to actively engage in these efforts, embrace diversity in our hospital, and ensure we are delivering equitable care at McLaren Flint.

We extend our deepest condolences to the friends and family of Dr. Moore, and we are grateful for the many lives she touched through her dedication to the field of medicine.
