What Anticoagulants Do For You

If your blood has been determined to be at risk for blood clots, you could also be at risk for heart attack, stroke and other serious medical problems. Coumadin® (warfarin) is a medicine that will reduce the risk that your blood will clot inappropriately. The drug is an anticoagulant;. Anti - means against; and coagulant - means to thicken into a gel or solid. Sometimes Coumadin® (warfarin) is called a blood thinner as it helps your blood flow freely and not clot easily.

Patients who are using Coumadin® (warfarin) must be routinely monitored. You will need to have blood samples drawn to help manage your anticoagulant therapy. You will also need to be careful that you do not do something to hurt yourself and cause bleeding. Without careful monitoring, proper dose adjustments, access to the latest information and oversight by an experienced healthcare provider, patients sometimes have adverse, even life-threatening events while on this medication. A clinic dedicated to providing information, testing, monitoring and treatment with Coumadin® (warfarin) can reduce or eliminate many of the problems associated with this therapy. That is why we established the Bay Regional Anticoagulation Clinic (BRAC).
