“Given her injuries and the fact she had no pulse at the scene, she had a remote chance of making it.”
On a night in late November 2018, freezing cold caused the black ice that nearly took Lauren’s life.
On her way home, Lauren steered her car around a gentle curve less than a mile away from her house in Waterford when she hit the black ice and began to skid.
She slid right into the path of a box truck.
The truck struck her driver’s side, sending the car down the road after a devastating collision and sending Lauren violently across the car.
First responders arrived on the scene to find a mangled car that would require the Jaws of Life to open.
It took 18 minutes to reach Lauren.
Removing her broken body, EMTs found that she was without a heartbeat.
Transporting what appeared to be a lifeless body into an ambulance, Lauren was taken to McLaren Oakland in Pontiac, a verified Level II trauma center.
“The crash left Lauren with very substantial, life-threatening injuries,” said Courtney Berry, RN, trauma program manager at McLaren Oakland. “The reality of the situation was, given her injuries and the fact she had no pulse at the scene, she had a remote chance of making it.”
Remarkably, Lauren is alive today. And grateful.
