The COVID-19 pandemic has placed — seemingly overnight — most of the country under stay-at-home orders as a method to effectively slow the spread of the coronavirus.

Understandably, such sudden and drastic changes to everyday life can cause feelings of stress and anxiety, and staying at home can make us long for “a return to normalcy.”

Taking steps to ensure your own well-being during this unprecedented time is essential.

Recommendations

Follow these recommendations (in addition to continuing to follow state and federal guidelines to mitigate the spread of the virus) to stay in good health during this pandemic in mind, body and spirit.

Responsible outdoor exercise

Stay-at-home orders do still allow you to go outside for exercise — be it walking, jogging or riding a bike. Be responsible, though, and maintain safe social distancing.

Online fitness videos

Free or paid subscriptions, countless resources are available online to lead you in an at-home workout regardless of skill level and what equipment is available at home.

Virtual meet-up

Miss your book club or getting together with friends for drinks? Host a virtual gathering with your friends to talk about the latest book on your list or share a laugh over a glass of wine.

Try a new recipe

Putting off trying a new, healthy recipe because you didn’t have the time? Start experimenting with some new recipes and dishes to occupy your mind with a healthy task to fill some time.

Unplug once in a while

The constant coverage of the pandemic can become overbearing to anyone. For the sake of your anxiety level and overall mental health, step away for a little bit and devote your time and energy elsewhere.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help

These are unprecedented times. There’s no shame in feeling overwhelmed and, more importantly, there’s no shame in asking for help to try to cope.
