common illnesses

Each week, we ask our ER team what they’re seeing more and more of in our Emergency Department.

This week, Dr. Stephanie Hernandez, an emergency physician at McLaren Macomb, reports:

Influenza

The number of flu cases have spiked, with the chief complaint of the A strain being high fever, muscle aches and cough. Patients with the B strain are also reporting symptoms of nausea and diarrhea.

Upper respiratory infection

Symptoms of congestion, runny nose, persistent cough and diagnosis of an upper respiratory infection remain steadily high.

Gastro

Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea symptoms and cases of gastroenteritis, also referred to as a stomach flu, remain steady.
