Your weight is over: Are you a candidate for bariatric surgery?

According to the Center for Disease Control, overweight and or obese is described as one's weight that is higher than what is considered as a healthy weight for a given height. Obesity is dangerous. Not only can it influence nearly all your body's systems, it also can significantly affect your quality of life and reduce your life expectancy. If you are overweight, your risk for the following health problems increases:

  • High blood pressure and high blood cholesterol
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Coronary heart disease
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Stroke
  • Gout
  • Arthritis
  • Sleep apnea and respiratory problems
  • Female reproductive problems, including pregnancy complications, irregular periods and infertility
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Back problems
  • Psychological disorders, including depression

The key to losing weight is to consume fewer calories than the body uses. Or, said another way, eat less and exercise more. This may sound simple enough, losing weight can be quite challenging. A weight loss program should include the following: healthy eating plans that reduce calories but don't exclude specific foods or food groups; regular physical activity; tips on healthy behavioral changes that also consider your cultural needs; slow and steady weight loss goals; and a plan to keep the weight off.  Some people can lose weight on their own, but others require a more formal program.

Weight- loss surgery is an excellent tool for weight loss. It has also shown to be effective at reducing the impact of many obesity-related conditions such as type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, and heart disease. Weight- loss surgery contributes to weight loss in two main ways, restriction and decreased ability to digest and/or absorb nutrients from food.  However, you must be willing to make permanent changes in your diet and lifestyle. All surgeries have risks and benefits to consider.  If you are 100 pounds above your ideal body weight, have a BMI higher than 35 with one or more weight related health conditions, you may be a candidate for bariatric surgery.
