Hemgenix
Hemgenix is a one-time gene therapy to treat adults with hemophilia-B, a non-cancerous bleeding disorder caused by the lack of factor IX, a clotting protein in the blood.
How it Works
Before treatment, your care team will assess your overall health and conduct some tests, including testing for factor IX inhibitors and evaluating your overall liver health. Hemgenix is delivered to your body with a one-time dose through IV infusion, heading toward your liver to help your body produce elevated and protective factor IX on its own. Once the infusion is completed, you’ll work with your care team at Karmanos to create a plan to monitor your factor IX and lover enzyme levels through routine blood tests.
Hemgenix received FDA approval in 2022 with no serious treatment-related side effects reported. The most frequent side effects reported were:
- Liver enzyme elevations.
- Headache.
- Elevated levels of a certain blood enzyme.
- Flu-like symptoms.
- Infusion-related reactions.
- Fatigue.
- Nausea.
- Feeling unwell.
