About Immersion Therapy

McLaren Health Management Group is bringing cutting-edge technology in the form of immersive therapy to its hospice and palliative care settings. Immersive Therapy, delivered through virtual reality (VR), is transforming how caregivers support patients in hospice care. Using specially designed headsets and a caregiver-controlled tablet, the platform allows users to explore calming landscapes, engage in cognitive activities, and revisit places from their past.

Through immersive virtual reality therapy, patients can step into breathtaking landscapes, revisit cherished memories, and find peace in guided relaxation.

Tailored Care

McLaren’s Immersive Therapy platform is tailored to the needs of older adults and individuals facing advanced illness. Whether it is providing a calming experience, helping them revisit meaningful memories, or helping them complete their bucket list, Immersive Therapy is used in a way that supports patients in what matters most to them.

Therapeutic Escapes

Immersion Therapy allows patients to “travel” virtually to peaceful or meaningful locations—like beaches, forests, or even cities they’ve always wanted to visit. This offers comfort, a sense of freedom, and an emotional lift during a time when mobility is limited.

Reminiscence

Immersive Therapy can help patients reconnect with personal memories by simulating past environments or events (like visiting their childhood hometown or a favorite vacation spot), which can spark conversation and bring emotional relief. For veterans, this can be especially meaningful. McLaren Hospice proudly supports those who have served our country, and Immersive Therapy offers a unique way to honor their experiences by recreating familiar places, moments from service, or other meaningful memories that provide comfort and connection.

Pain And Anxiety Management

Immersive VR experiences can distract from physical pain or emotional distress. Calming environments and guided meditations in VR have been shown to reduce anxiety and improve mood.

How it works

Care teams administer sessions during scheduled visits, or train family members to operate the system. The therapy requires no internet connection during session. Each system includes:

  • A wireless VR headset designed for comfort and hygiene in clinical or home settings
  • A caregiver tablet with control and monitoring features
  • Access to ever-growing library of therapeutic experiences, including nature, music, art, travel, faith, and legacy storytelling
  • Optional caregiver training and support modules to integrate VR into routine care plan
