What is a midwife?

The nurse midwife in our practice is a registered nurse who also holds a masters degree in nursing with a special certification in nurse-midwifery. While CNMs independently manage the care of healthy patients, they have 24-hour access to physicians, board certified in obstetrics and gynecology. The practice philosophy is one of education and support for women with a focus on wellness and consumer choice. The result is an added dimension of care for women and their families. Most insurance and Medicaid covers the cost of midwifery care.

We understand that your birth experience is unique and unlike any other experience in your life. Years after your baby arrives, the birth memories will be as though they happened yesterday. If a baby is in your future, chances are you are already thinking about the birth experience. Choosing a nurse-midwife for your prenatal care and birth is one way to assure this time is memorable and focused on your individual needs.

Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM)

Today, the certified nurse-midwife (CNM) fills this important role by combining professional skill and individualized care. With special training in women’s health, she offers women a safe, sensitive, and very personal alternative. CNMs view pregnancy and childbirth as a normal, natural life event rather than a medical process. Because CNMs believe that most complications of pregnancy and childbirth can be prevented, they are committed to ongoing education and counseling. When you choose a CNM, you are choosing an active role in decision making and responsibility for the health of you and your baby.
