On May 11, more than 100 guests and supporters came together for the 22nd straight year and raised more than $7,500 to benefit health care workers and volunteers who aid people nearing the end of their lives. To date, the Nancy Streber Memorial Golf Classic — which this year and for most of its history has been played at Heather Hills Golf Club in Romeo — raised more than $100,000 for the cause, the proceeds of which go to the McLaren Hospice & Homecare Foundation.
“We are grateful for the unwavering dedication Dave Streber and his family have shown in honoring Nancy Streber’s legacy and supporting McLaren Hospice,” said Cindy Tomlinson, Vice President of McLaren Hospice and Palliative Care. “Their commitment helps McLaren Hospice in its mission to care for terminally ill patients, regardless of their ability to pay.”
This year, the Streber family also dedicated the outing to long-time supporter and family friend, Dean Wolfe, Sr., as well as Wilma Kraft and Rick Karn.
Twenty-eight years ago Nancy and her husband Paul welcomed Nancy’s father into their Almont home so he could receive round-the-clock hospice care following a terminal cancer diagnosis. Just five years after her father died, Nancy Streber also passed away at her home in Almont — but not before making known that one of her last wishes was to give back to the people who cared for her father at the end of his life.
In 1997, Dave Streber launched the Nancy Streber Memorial Golf Classic to honor the legacy and wishes of his mother. Dave and his family have hosted the event on Mother's Day weekend every year since, donating all proceeds to McLaren Hospice.
As a nonprofit organization, McLaren Hospice relies on the donations and efforts of our community to help care for terminally ill patients, even if they cannot afford to pay for services. Through support from events like the Nancy Streber Memorial Golf Classic, McLaren Hospice can provide non-reimbursed services such as music therapy and bereavement support programs, including Camp Forget-Me-Not, McLaren’s grief camp for children.
