Karmanos Cancer Institute’s Farmington Hills clinic designated an ACR Breast Imaging Center of Excellence

The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute’s Lawrence and Idell Weisberg Cancer Center in Farmington Hills has been designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR).

By awarding facilities the status of a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, the ACR recognizes breast imaging centers that have earned accreditation in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy and breast ultrasound (including ultrasound-guided breast biopsy).

Certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in their field conducted evaluations in each breast imaging modality at Weisberg Cancer Center. Their review concludes that Karmanos has achieved high practice standards in image quality, personnel qualifications, facility equipment, quality control procedures and quality assurance programs.

“Receiving this designation by the ACR means we have voluntarily gone through a vigorous review process, and we are proud of the work our staff does to make sure that we exceed nationally-accepted standards and safety guidelines,” said Mara Jelich, director of radiation oncology and imaging at Karmanos. “The ACR’s gold seal assures our patients that they are at a center that has met the personnel, equipment, quality assurance and quality control procedure requirements for patient safety.

With the extension and renovations at our Farmington Hills clinic, we want to ensure we can perform the highest quality of treatment for our patients, especially as a preferred breast imaging center. With additional breast imaging equipment, we can now accommodate more patients for breast screening and care at Weisberg and are exceeding standards for our patients.”

The ACR is a national professional organization serving more than 36,000 diagnostic and interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians and medical physicists with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging, radiation oncology and the delivery of comprehensive health care services. Founded in 1924, the ACR is one of the largest and most influential medical associations in the United States. The ACR devotes its resources to making imaging and radiation therapy safe, effective and accessible to those who need it.

For years, the ACR has recognized Karmanos’ headquarters in Detroit as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence.  The NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center was recently named one of America’s Best Hospitals for Cancer Care by the Women’s Choice Award®, among being ranked in the top eight percent for Breast Care and the top five percent for Mammogram Imaging.
