McLaren Flint, part of statewide McLaren Health Care, has completed its $61 million expansion and renovation project to enhance several areas on the campus of the longstanding community hospital.
Following more than two years of development and construction, the project has added 13,735-square feet of clinical care space to the Karmanos Cancer Institute at McLaren Flint, increasing capacity and patients’ access to several surgical oncology services, while also expanding the McLaren Proton Therapy Center to allow space for the forthcoming addition of proton therapy units.
A completely overhauled canopy was also installed at the main entrance, upgrading and enhancing the hospital’s façade.
“The completion of this expansion marks a tangible commitment of our hospital’s ongoing dedication to better serve the community,” said Chris Candela, McLaren Flint President and CEO. “With these renovations, we are not only increasing our capacity, but we are transforming how efficiently our care is delivered, a further reflection of our deep commitment to enhancing health outcomes. With years of planning and construction dedicated to this expansion, we are thankful to our team members, leadership, and community partners for their support of this project, which will achieve its full vision when our facility is among the first in the world to offer upright treatment technology to our patients.”
Planning for the project started in 2023, when expansion began in the McLaren Proton Therapy Center as the facility prepared for the arrival of two upright treatment units from Leo Cancer Care to nearly double the center’s current care capacity.
Pending FDA clearance, the program is expected to bring these units online in 2026.
When the project’s construction began in earnest, Chad Grant, McLaren Health Care Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, formerly McLaren Flint President and CEO, said “With our investments, we aim to advance the care options available to our patients while complementing their overall experience, objectives achieved through this enhancement project. McLaren Flint and the city hold a special place in our organization’s history, and this investment is a demonstration of our continuing commitment to the wellbeing of the entire region.”
