Get Ready for the Season: Why Sports Physicals Matter

With the fall school sports season just around the corner, now is the perfect time to start thinking about sports physicals. Staying active and participating in sports offers a range of health benefits for young athletes—exercise builds muscle, strengthens bones, improves cardiovascular and respiratory health, and fosters mental well-being. But before hitting the field, court, or track, a sports physical is an important step to ensure athletes are healthy and ready to compete safely.

A sports physical, also known as a pre-participation physical examination (PPE), is a check-up that helps determine whether it's safe for a student to participate in a specific sport. The exam helps identify any potential health risks or medical conditions that could be worsened by athletic activity. It also provides recommendations for maintaining health and preventing injury, helping athletes perform at their best throughout the season.

The exam typically includes two parts: a review of medical history and a physical examination. The health care provider will ask about personal and family medical history, past injuries such as concussions, and any issues experienced during exercise. The physical exam portion often includes measuring height, weight, blood pressure, and visual acuity, along with an evaluation of the heart, lungs, joints, strength, and flexibility.

The exam may be tailored to the sport the athlete plans to play. For example, a provider might focus on the lower body for a soccer or track athlete, while giving more attention to the arms and shoulders for a baseball or softball player. Based on the findings, the provider will either give clearance to participate or recommend further testing if needed.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, sports physicals should be completed at least six weeks before the sports season starts. This timing allows for any necessary follow-up appointments or treatments. Many providers offer affordable flat-rate sports physicals—often around $20—which are not typically billed to insurance.

Scheduling early helps avoid the last-minute rush and ensures student athletes are prepared, healthy, and safe for the upcoming season. Whether new to sports or a returning player, a sports physical is a vital part of starting the school year strong.
