Get to Know McLaren’s New Freestanding Emergency Department

Coming soon to Delta Township and Grand Ledge

Eaton County residents can look forward to significant expansion in local health care services with the upcoming opening of McLaren’s new freestanding emergency department (FSED) and ambulatory care center in Grand Ledge.

The new facility, located on the corner of Nixon Road and E. Saginaw Highway, officially broke ground in June 2024, and is scheduled to open to patients this fall.

The FSED will be open 24/7 with onsite board-certified emergency medicine physicians and highly trained medical staff ready to provide lifesaving care.

What is a freestanding emergency department?

“An FSED is a standalone health care facility that provides emergency medical services but operates independently from a traditional hospital,” says Dr. Larisa Traill, medical director for the emergency department at McLaren Greater Lansing. “It is equipped to handle a wide variety of medical emergencies, including serious injuries, illnesses, and urgent health issues.”

When you need immediate care, the FSED is designed to provide that level of service and provide you the care you need, seven days a week, 24 hours a day.

What can they treat?

The FSED is designed to provide immediate care when every minute counts including many of the same capabilities as a hospital-based emergency department to treat emergencies such as heart attacks or strokes.

Examples of other serious conditions that can be treated include:

  • Difficulty breathing or severe asthma attacks
  • Head injuries
  • Broken bones
  • Severe burns
  • Deep wounds requiring stitches
  • Abdominal pain
  • Severe allergic reactions
  • Uncontrolled bleeding

While all care provided at an FSED is outpatient, the staff can facilitate a seamless transfer to a nearby hospital if a patient requires an inpatient hospital stay.

“If your condition requires hospitalization, surgery, or more specialized care, we can stabilize you at the FSED and then transfer you to the hospital,” says Dr. Traill.

More than just an ER

Not only will the new facility offer an emergency department with critical care capabilities, but also the health center will also offer a variety of additional services including diagnostic imaging – such as X-rays, CT scans, ultrasounds, and a mobile MRI — as well as a full-service lab and primary care services with walk-in appointments and online scheduling available, and even some outpatient procedures.

“This will allow us to quickly assess and treat our patients onsite,” said Dr. Traill.
