Dr. Nicolas J. Mouawad, a vascular surgeon with McLaren Bay Region and the hospital’s chief of vascular & endovascular surgery and vice chair of its department of surgery, has again been recognized for his proficiency and exceptional care, earning a rank among the top 30 vascular surgeons in the county, according to Newsweek’s America’s Leading Doctors – Vascular Surgery 2025.
Ranked 22nd among vascular surgeons throughout the country, this marks Dr. Mouawad’s second appearance on the Newsweek list, which evaluates publicly available clinical data and quality metrics and surveys medical experts to develop the ranking.
“I am honored and truly grateful for this recognition, but more than anything, it is a privilege to serve the communities of the Great Lakes Bay Region and contribute to its collective wellbeing,” Dr. Mouawad said. “This honor is shared with our entire surgical team — working together, it is their dedication, expertise, and unwavering commitment to patient care that make the impact."
With more than 100,000 cases in the United States last year, vascular surgeons perform specialized procedures to relieve the quality-of-life-limiting symptoms of common, potentially life-threatening conditions, such as repairing damaged blood vessels, creating blood vessel access for dialysis patients, and treating blood clots and aneurysms, a potentially lifesaving procedure.
“We are grateful to have Dr. Mouawad care for those in our community and beyond who choose McLaren Bay Region for their health care needs,” said Dr. Kenneth Parsons, McLaren Bay Region Chief Medical Officer. “His commitment to delivering the highest level of vascular care is a true testament to his exceptional clinical acumen, deep dedication to his patients, and passion for advancing vascular care available in the bay region and worldwide.”
Dr. Mouawad, MD, MPH, MBA, DFSVS, FRCS, FACS, RPVI, in his evaluation by Newsweek was rated as being high performing in procedures that improve blood flow in carotid arteries and treatments caring for peripheral vascular disease.
A longtime member of the McLaren Bay Region medical staff and a favorite among his patients, Dr. Mouawad has routinely introduced advanced procedures to the community, as with his T-CAR stroke-prevention procedure, while also administering timely, emergency care, such as his treatment of pulmonary embolisms, deep vein thrombosis, and aortic aneurysms.
