Lisa Morgan was already a seasoned mom of two boys. Her first was born in 2021 at 9 pounds, 14 ounces, and her second in 2023 at 10 pounds. With a third on the way, after she patiently waited over a week past her due date for a natural labor to begin, her medical team felt it was important for her to be induced — something she was not prepared for.
“My previous births had all been spontaneous, so I was very intimidated about being induced,” said Morgan. “But as soon as I walked into McLaren Greater Lansing’s Birthplace, I was immediately comforted by the staff, doctors, and nurses, and they really put me at ease, encouraged me, and built a plan we all felt comfortable with.”
On September 30, 2025, Morgan and her husband welcomed a healthy baby boy, Maddox. Weighing 12 pounds, 11 ounces, Maddox was one of McLaren Greater Lansing’s largest babies delivered this year (only two babies have been born over 11 pounds to date this year).
“We were in awe,” said Morgan. “Several staff had mentioned this may have been one of the largest births they have seen.”
Morgan shared that the experience she had was made possible by the extraordinary care she received from the nurses and support staff who helped her along the way; giving her positive affirmations, working as a team, even through a complication in which her son’s shoulders got stuck (also known as shoulder dystocia), to safely deliver her son vaginally without any harm.
“From our nurses Sarah, Brie, Kristin, Brooke, and Tamilikia to Dr. Adams and Dr. Born, and our midwife, Dominique, they treated us as if we were their family and took great care of me and my baby,” said Morgan. “It made a lasting impact on me and my family.”
Morgan’s unique birth stories don’t stop there. Her first son is a New Year’s baby, born at 1:30 a.m. in 2021, and her middle son, also born at McLaren in 2023, was born on her husband’s birthday. Each of her children is also considered a rainbow baby, as she experienced a miscarriage before each of them.
“Our babies are such a blessing to us, and each has a unique story to them and I’m appreciative for the help and care we received in helping them come into this world safely and as healthy as possible,” said Morgan.
The Birthplace delivers an average of 1,200 babies a year. With safety and comfort at the forefront, it is equipped with state-of-the-art maternal, fetal, and infant monitoring equipment. It provides a comforting and calming environment for expectant parents, with large, spacious rooms and private bathrooms equipped with both a bath and shower. The unit has 16 labor-delivery-recovery-postpartum suites, four obstetrical triage rooms, two fully outfitted C-section rooms, and a nursery.
The Birthplace is recognized for its safe care standards. Earlier this year, it was honored with the platinum designation by the Michigan Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health (MI AIM), the highest rating, showing its dedication to healthy outcomes for moms and babies.
