Dr. Patrick McClellan Dr. Patrick McClellan, a McLaren Macomb family medicine physician, is a 2018 recipient of The Walter F. Patenge Medal of Public Service from the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. The honor recognizes individuals “for their commitment to excellence in medicine, government and public service.”
Dr. McClellan, though now retired from active practice after spending more than 50 years on the McLaren Macomb medical staff, continues to play an active role in the education of McLaren Macomb family medicine residents through the Medical Outreach Clinic, a mobile medical unit serving the uninsured population of Macomb County.
“While it’s important, as a physician, to treat the patient, you never want to neglect the community,” Dr. McClellan said. “It was very important to me to give back as part of my career, to help those who might struggle to get adequate healthcare. To be recognized for this effort is a tremendous honor, but I was just one of a large, exceptional team, and the lasting satisfaction for me will be the service of the clinic.”
In 1995, Dr. McClellan resolved to build a medical outreach unit to treat the uninsured population of Macomb County at no cost to the patient. To date, the McLaren Macomb Medical Outreach Clinic has served thousands across the county, and welcomed hundreds of students to benefit their training.
The Walter F. Patenge Medal of Public Service is the highest honor of the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, annually awarding three individuals with honors for their public service to their industry.
