ED physician Flaherty earns MSU COM faculty award

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich.—Dr. Patrick Flaherty, an emergency medicine physician at McLaren Macomb who is also a clinical assistant professor at the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, was awarded the college’s Clinical Science Faculty Award for the 2018-2019 school year.

The distinction is “awarded to the faculty member who is deemed the best role model and instructor of clinical medicine.”

“It was an honor to receive this award from MSU,” Dr. Flaherty said, a graduate of MSU COM. “It’s truly been rewarding to maintain involvement with a university that helped shape my career. I have found that teaching not only allows me to help educate the next generation of physicians, but learn from them also.”

Dr. Flaherty has been a faculty member of the MSU COM Macomb campus since it opened in 2009, mainly teaching case-based classes for first- and second-year medical students. Additionally, he previously served as the emergency medicine residency program medical director at McLaren Macomb.

“Dr. Flaherty is an outstanding emergency physician with great clinical skills and empathy for the patients he is caring for,” said Dr. James Larkin, physician and director of emergency medicine at McLaren Macomb. “Those who are taught by Dr. Flaherty or treated as a patient by him are very fortunate. This award is just a recognition of his skills and dedication.”
