McLaren Bay Region, a 415-bed, Bay City-based hospital, recently completed floor-to-ceiling upgrades to the 3 East unit of its main campus, resulting in an enhancement to the overall look and function of the recovery unit. As part of the rehabilitation project, previously double-occupancy rooms in the 30-bed unit were converted to exclusively private, single rooms for surgical patients.
The move is the latest in a multi-year commitment to reinvestment in hospital facilities to provide our patient community the utmost in care resources. Higher levels of privacy in the new spaces allow for greater patient safety and a holistic environment for healing while lowering infection risk.
"Private rooms are increasingly becoming the standard at many hospitals across the country. These rooms are quieter, offer a healing environment for patients, make visitation easier, and help to prevent infections," said Kelly Miceli, director of patient care services at McLaren Bay Region. "The private rooms have lessened the overall noise and sleep disruptions, allowing patients to heal post-operatively."
Using the latest research, all facets of the unit improvements were selected to ensure rooms showcase a modern, ageless look that appeals to patients of all ages while promoting relaxation. Updates include new, quieter ceiling tiles that improved the Noise Reduction Coefficient by nearly 30%, textured flooring to prevent slippage, new lighting and cabinetry with antimicrobial surfaces, along with refreshed bathrooms featuring new shower fixtures and faucets.

Upgrades to the 17,326-square-foot unit are in line with previous enrichment projects implemented at the main campus hospital in recent years. Since 2019, McLaren Bay Region has rehabilitated six different inpatient areas, totaling 126 rooms and 196 beds.
