Hospital Staff Making a Difference Across Genesee County

McLaren Flint and McLaren Health Plan Educate Enrollees

Hospital staff provided stroke and cancer education to attendees of McLaren Health Plan’s annual member appreciation day at the Sloan Museum on August 2.

 

Health Information Available at Annual GAASHOF Event

Hospital staff had health information for those attending an annual Greater African American Sports Hall of Fame event on July 20.

 

McLaren Flint Staff Feeds the City Vital Health Information

The annual summer Feed the City event, put on by Wayne Barber and the Center for Hope offered people living in Flint neighborhoods a day of food, information, and fun. McLaren Flint's neuroscience stroke program staff joined the Flint Stroke Coalition and Medstar and MMR ambulance services to offer vital health information and blood pressure checks.

 

Stroke Education Part of Chamber Networking Event

Representatives from McLaren Flint's stroke program shared warning signs and other important stroke information with representatives from 200 local businesses at a Flint/Genesee Chamber of Commerce networking event in Grand Blanc on June 12.

 

Great Turnout for Senior Power Day

Hundreds of seniors turned out for the annual Valley Area Agency on Aging's (VAAA) Senior Power Day at Crossroads Village in Flint in May. Team members from the stroke program and the Karmanos Cancer Institute at McLaren Flint handed out information and talked with seniors about the resources we have available for their health needs.

 

Elementary School Students Learn Stroke Warning Signs, What to do in an Emergency

Flint's Eisenhower Elementary School students learned how to spot a stroke using B.E.F.A.S.T., the importance of calling 911, and healthy lifestyle choices. Nicole Murray from McLaren Northern Michigan developed a slide show for the students and came down to assist the Flint team, including Flint Stroke Coordinator Connie LaPoint, with its first Stroke Hero event. MMR (Mobile Medical Response) company was also there, helping kids learn hands-only CPR. The Flint Stroke Coalition put on the Stroke Hero event. The coalition, funded by a State of Michigan grant, was formed in response to the high stroke volume and social inequities in Genesee County.

 

Juneteenth Event Provided Community with Health Screenings and Education

McLaren Flint partnered with McLaren Health Plan to participate in the National Minority Quality Forum Juneteenth Flint Mini Clinic on June 19. The event, held at the Sylvester Broome Empowerment Village, brought important information and screenings to the community.

Diabetes Program Coordinator Amy Hughes and Lead Dietitian Lewis Strong offered diabetes education and blood sugar screenings. McLaren Flint Bariatric and Metabolic Institute Assistant Medical Director Dr. Nicole Franklin provided BMI screenings and education.

 

Basic Needs Fair Links Community to Vital Resources

McLaren Flint and McLaren Health Plan proudly supported the 15th Annual Community Basic Needs Fair on March 23, hosted by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and the Gloria Coles Flint Public Library. This free event provided essential resources to Flint and Genesee County residents, and over 100 people participated.
