McLaren Greater Lansing, part of statewide McLaren Health Care, has earned a Chest Pain Center Accreditation with Primary PCI from the American College of Cardiology, becoming the only hospital in the Tri-County Area to hold the nationally recognized designation for its skill and proficiency in the care of patients experiencing a heart attack or other cardiac emergency.
Designation as a Chest Pain Center recognizes that McLaren Greater Lansing has demonstrated commitment to its patients and their care — expedited diagnosis, appropriate care, and treatment with evidence-based protocols and procedures. PCI, shorthand for percutaneous coronary intervention, also known as coronary angioplasty, is a nonsurgical procedure that uses a balloon to open blocked or narrowed coronary arteries to relieve patients of the symptoms of a heart disease or reduce the harm caused by a heart attack.
The accreditation was earned following a thorough and rigorous on-site evaluation by representatives from the American College of Cardiology to ensure that the hospital and its processes met or exceeded the strict — though necessary — standards in order to provide for patients in need of this level of care.
“Earning accreditation as a Chest Pain Center is a significant and meaningful achievement for our hospital and, more importantly, for the community and patients we serve,” said Dr. Majid Mughal, an interventional cardiologist with McLaren Greater Lansing. “When someone arrives with chest pain, every second matters, and this designation is a reflection of the capabilities and clinical skill of our entire team. We are proud to be in the position to offer this exceptional level of care to our patients and provide our community with the confidence that their care meets a high national standard.”
Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for more than 26,000 deaths in Michigan in 2024, making timely and coordinated emergency care essential. Accredited Chest Pain Centers are equipped to provide faster treatment during the critical early stages of a heart attack, significantly reducing the risk of complications and improving survival rates.
As part of the accreditation process, McLaren Greater Lansing demonstrated its ability to streamline care from the moment a patient arrives, including prompt electrocardiogram (ECG) testing, timely access to cardiac catheterization, and coordinated care across emergency medical services and hospital teams.
