McLaren Hospice Awarded CHAP Accreditation

Community Health Accreditation Partner, Inc., (CHAP) announced that McLaren Hospice has been awarded CHAP Accreditation under the CHAP Hospice Standards of Excellence. The CHAP Accreditation is a symbol of quality that reflects the organization’s commitment to providing exceptional patient care.

McLaren Hospice underwent a rigorous, unannounced on-site survey in November 2019. During the four-day review, a team of Community Health Accreditation Partner expert surveyors evaluated compliance with standards related to several areas, including emergency management, environment of care, infection prevention and care, leadership, quality, patient safety, and nursing and medication management. CHAP also interviewed management and staff and conducted home health visits to interview patients.

CHAP has accredited home and community-based care for more than 50 years. More than 5,000 home health, hospice, pharmacy, infusion therapy nursing, and home medical equipment companies currently maintain accreditation from CHAP, awarded for a three-year period.

Matt Meeuwse, Volunteer Services Manager, states of the accomplishment, “Being CHAP accredited demonstrates the hard work and commitment our staff and volunteers have for our patients and families as we continue to provide outstanding hospice care. This is a testament that McLaren Hospice continues to exceed or meet the national hospice benchmarks quality standards, and families can continue to trust that they will receive the best care possible. Being recognized as a premier provider of hospice care services is an honor and privilege to be a part of.”

“I’m incredibly proud of the work done by the hospice team to prepare for CHAP Accreditation,” says Cindy Tomlinson, Vice President of McLaren Hospice & Palliative Care. “It was a team effort that included continuous process improvement. The hospice team is dedicated to providing quality care to those with a life-limiting illness. Achieving CHAP Accreditation highlights the excellent care provided by McLaren Hospice.”

“At McLaren, our mission is to create the best value in healthcare, as defined by quality outcomes and cost,” says Bart Buxton, EdD, President & CEO of McLaren Health Management Group, parent company for McLaren Hospice. “Whereas our CHAP accreditation in Hospice speaks volumes to our focus on quality outcomes and quality processes, those tenants are the underpinning of our ability to drive value to our patients and their families. Our strategic intent, ‘to do Hospice, better than anyone else,’” Buxton continues, “is further validated by this accreditation process and outcome and continues to differentiate the care given to patients and families by our outstanding staff of clinicians.”

“By achieving CHAP Accreditation, McLaren Hospice has shown a commitment to excellence,” says Barbara McCann, CHAP President & CEO. “We are excited to begin our partnership with McLaren Hospice by offering support in its commitment to providing quality care and continuous improvement.”

In the first quarter of fiscal year 2020, McLaren Hospice scored in the 99th percentile for quality scores according to Hospice Information Set (HIS) data, a service of Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), a federal agency with the United States Department of Health and Human Services. Areas assessed include treatment preference, pain screening and treatment, and shortness of breath screening and treatment.

As a nonprofit organization, McLaren Hospice provides a variety of services to patients and their families in more than 30 counties throughout Michigan. By providing high-quality, cost-effective care to patients with a terminal illness, McLaren Hospice allows them to remain in the comfort of their own home. The patient, their family and loved ones all receive care from the hospice team.

About Community Health Accreditation Program, Inc.

CHAP is an independent, nonprofit accrediting body for home and community-based health care organizations. Created in 1965, CHAP was the first to recognize the need and value for accreditation in home and community-based care. Through “deeming” authority granted by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), CHAP is a nationally approved accrediting organization who retains authority to survey agencies providing home health, hospice, pharmacy, infusion therapy nursing and home medical equipment services, to determine if they meet the Medicare Conditions of Participation and CMS Quality Standards. CHAP’s mission is to define, verify, and advance the highest quality of home and community-based care through its standards, accreditation, education, and research.
