McLaren Macomb opens county’s first clinic to treat congenital heart disease in adults

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich.—McLaren Macomb, the 288-bed hospital in Mount Clemens, has opened Macomb County’s first clinic to monitor and provide treatment for adults born with congenital heart defects. A heart defect that develops before birth, the majority of congenital heart diseases require life-long routine follow-up with a specialized cardiologist.

Directing care at the McLaren Macomb Adult Congenital Heart Clinic will be Dr. Thomas Forbes, a pediatric cardiologist who also specializes in treating adults who have been living with a congenital heart defect.

“A heart defect at birth requires regular check-up with a cardiologist to ensure that patient’s quality of life is not severely impacted,” Dr. Forbes said. “Many adults born with a congenital heart defect can live enriched lives, but it’s important that they receive the proper care.”

It is estimated that one million adults in the U.S. live with a congenital heart disease, but fewer than 50,000 receive follow-up care from a specially trained cardiologist able to treat their unique condition.

“McLaren Macomb is committed to providing comprehensive cardiac care to all of our patients, offering the highest standard of care to help them live longer, healthier lives,” said Dr. Timothy Logan, interventional cardiologist with the McLaren Cardiovascular Institute and chief of cardiology at McLaren Macomb. “We are excited to expand our team of specialized physicians.”

Adults with congenital heart disease can be treated with medication to control blood pressure and heart rate while more complex cases may require special procedures. Dr. Forbes will partner with McLaren Macomb interventional cardiologists Dr. Timothy Logan, Dr. Sibin Zacharias and Dr. Mark Zainea to perform any procedures. The clinic will be equipped for patients to undergo diagnostic testing and stress tests in order for Dr. Forbes to create an optimal care plan.

The Adult Congenital Heart Clinic is located at 21550 Harrington Blvd., in Clinton Township, located across the street from McLaren Macomb hospital.
