McLaren Northern Michigan is proud to announce they are a verified Level II Trauma Center by the Verification Review Committee, an ad hoc committee of the American College of Surgeons. This achievement recognizes the commitment of McLaren Northern Michigan to providing optimal care for injured patients.

McLaren Northern Michigan has pledged to enhance trauma capabilities in order to provide access to high-quality trauma care to northern Michigan and surrounding areas. This achievement confirms the ongoing commitment to doing what’s best for northern Michigan patients.

“We recognized that there was a need for higher level trauma care in northern Michigan,” stated Todd Burch, President & CEO of McLaren Northern Michigan. “We serve a large rural geographic area that immediately benefits from an advanced level of care. I am extremely proud of the strong trauma team that serves our community and provides the safe, quality health care that our patients have come to know and trust.”

To receive the Level II Trauma Center verification, a hospital must demonstrate capacity and capability to provide the most advanced life-saving measures for critically injured patients. The comprehensive services required include:

  • · 24/7 coverage by a trauma surgeon
  • · 24/7 access to specialty and critical care physicians
  • · 24/7 on-call neurosurgeons and orthopedic surgeons
  • · 24/7 on-site anesthesia providers, surgical services team, and trauma trained nurses

“This achievement was made possible by the commitment and support from hospital administration, the board of trustees, and our dedicated clinical and non-clinical trauma team members,” said Jane Poquette, MSN, RN, TCRN/CEN, Trauma Program Manager. “To successfully build a program to meet the comprehensive criteria to be a trauma center requires full commitment and a shared goal to deliver the best trauma care to every patient, every time.”

In life’s most critical moments – after a devastating car crash, fall, injury, or act of violence – access to round-the-clock treatment by a team specially-trained in trauma care, can mean the difference between life and death.

“Accidents and injuries happen every day, and can happen to anyone”, expressed Michael Martin, MD, Trauma Medical Director at McLaren Northern Michigan. “We cannot predict

when or where a traumatic event may occur, so having a team ready for when those things do happen is the best possible scenario for our families and community.”
