McLaren Port Huron Reverified as a Level III Trauma Center by American College of Surgeons

McLaren Port Huron, part of statewide McLaren Health Care and the only nationally verified trauma center in St. Clair County, has earned reverification as a Level III trauma center. Requiring reverification every three years, this credential is earned following a thorough onsite evaluation of the hospital’s processes, staff credentials, patient outcomes, and compliance to trauma standards by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma.

McLaren Port Huron has maintained its trauma verification uninterrupted since 2016.

“We feel very fortunate to have the dedication of a very skilled team of providers and caregivers, all of whom have proven their commitment to supporting the community with potentially lifesaving care,” said Eric Cecava, McLaren Port Huron President and CEO. “We are grateful to be able to continue providing this critical service to our home community.”

To achieve trauma center verification, medical centers must meet the rigorous — yet essential — criteria that ensure the capabilities and institutional performance standards set by the American College of Surgeons.

“With every reverification process, we renew our promise to the community to maintain this vital service for those who find themselves suddenly in need of this crucial type of care,” said Dr. John Brooks, McLaren Port Huron Chief Medical Officer. “The process is precise and exacting, and it is an accomplishment to be recognized and shared among the clinical professionals whose exceptional abilities provide for the wellbeing of St. Clair County.”

McLaren Port Huron met the criteria through its ability to “provide prompt assessment, resuscitation, surgery, intensive care, and stabilization of injury” to patients in an emergency situation. The hospital’s ER is staffed and equipped to provide immediate care 24/7 by emergency physicians, and also have the availability of general surgeons, anesthesiology, radiology services, and operating room staff.

The hospital also has a transfer agreement with McLaren Macomb, a Level II Trauma Center, and other specialty care centers should patients require more comprehensive care.
