Robotic Surgery is Improving Lives for Those with Complex Hernias

Large, complex hernias can cause more than just physical discomfort; they can impact everyday activities like sitting up, getting dressed, or lifting objects, leaving some people feeling they can no longer do the things they enjoy.

However, there is a new sense of hope for the people in our community who suffer from complex hernias. Dr. Werner Henning, DO, general surgeon with Lansing Surgical Associates, and an expert in abdominal wall reconstruction, is helping patients regain their lives through robotic-assisted component separation, a highly advanced surgical technique.

“Component separation is a surgical technique where the layers of abdominal wall muscles are carefully released and repositioned to close the defect without putting the body under strain,” said Dr. Henning. “When done robotically, this intricate operation becomes even more precise and far less invasive.”

With over 50 robotic-assisted component separation procedures completed, Dr. Henning is one of the few surgeons performing this high-level repair, delivering life-changing results for those suffering from complex hernias.

Instead of a large incision typical of an open surgery, this technique uses just three small 8 mm incisions (about the size of a pencil eraser) to perform the entire repair using the da Vinci surgical robot. This technology allows for enhanced control, visibility, and precision, which can help patients heal faster and with less pain.

“Depending on the patient, they may go home the day of surgery or one to two days after, compared to a hospital stay that may be up to a week with a traditional open surgery,” said Dr. Henning. “It’s patient-dependent, but on average, most patients stay overnight and are discharged the day after surgery.”

Patients often get back to living their lives with more confidence and comfort and are able to do all the things they love again. For most, it's not just about healing physically; they also feel a huge sense of emotional relief.

While most patients who suffer from complex hernias are candidates for this surgery, there are some exceptions. If you are interested in having your complex hernia repaired, talk to your doctor about what options would be the best fit for you.
