Several McLaren Family Birthplace Centers Earn Maternal Levels of Care Verifications

Family Birthing Centers at several McLaren Health Care hospitals have earned advanced Maternal Levels of Care verifications from The Joint Commission, an achievement and sign of those locations’ commitment to providing a capable and safe environment and enhance outcomes for the patient and the child.

Family Birthing Centers at McLaren Flint, McLaren Bay Region (Bay City), and McLaren Greater Lansing have all earned Level II verification, and McLaren Central Michigan (Mount Pleasant) earned Level I.

Maternal Levels of Care verifications aim to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality through standardized and risk-appropriate maternal care. Verifications were earned following an in-person, onsite review of the department, its providers, and processes.

“Earning Maternal Levels of Care verification marks a significant milestone in strengthening maternal services at these hospitals,” said Laura Taylor, McLaren Health Care Director Corporate OB Women’s Health Service Line. “This achievement demonstrates the hospitals’ unwavering dedication to advancing maternal safety and improving outcomes, while providing mothers with exceptional care. The rigorous process required tremendous collaboration and commitment, and we are immensely proud of our teams for achieving this distinction.”

Recognition is deserved by the hospital-based department leaders and their staffs for their direction and guidance throughout the verification process: Becky Hoyt (Director of Patient Care Services, McLaren Flint), Katie Frank (Manager of Obstetrics & Childbirth Education, McLaren Bay Region), Melissa Baird (Patient Care Manager, McLaren Greater Lansing), and Andrea Frost (Manager Obstetrics & Women’s Health, McLaren Central Michigan).

Level I facilities have been verified for being able to provide “care for low- to moderate-risk pregnancies” by having demonstrated a proficiency to “detect, stabilize, and initiate management” of unanticipated issues that may arise in mothers and fetus or any neonatal problem that may occur.

Level II provides an added level of specialty care, capable of care for moderate- to high-risk conditions throughout pregnancies.
