Dr. Morhaf Al Achkar, M.D., Ph.D., MSCR, FAAFP, is the Associate Center Director for Education at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute and an associate professor of Oncology at Wayne State University School of Medicine. With over a decade of experience in education, clinical practice and research, Dr. Al Achkar is deeply committed to advancing cancer education and training. He focuses on enhancing professional development across the training continuum, impacting students, faculty, and healthcare professionals throughout the Karmanos catchment area and beyond. Diagnosed in 2016 with stage IV lung cancer due to ALK fusion, Dr. Al Achkar brings a unique perspective to his role. He leverages his experience as a cancer survivor and family physician to raise awareness about early detection, prevention, and the importance of timely lung cancer screening. His journey has also fueled a passion for research that addresses cancer patient experiences, especially disparities in diagnosis and care among minority communities, including African American and Middle Eastern populations. Dr. Al Achkar previously served at the University of Washington as an associate professor of Family Medicine and held positions at Indiana University.
