Quilting Guild Honors Veteran Hospice Patients

women holding quiltOn a sunny day in September, the members of the Hospice of Little Traverse Bay Quilting Guild met for an all-day quilting event. The group of 25 women spent the day carefully crafting red, white, and blue quilts to provide comfort and warmth to area Veterans who rely on VitalCare Hospice of Little Traverse Bay of McLaren Northern Michigan for end-of-life care.

“When needed, we provide services for our Veterans and the Quilting Guild wanted to do something memorable to honor them and thank them for their service,” stated Krista Siler, VitalCare Hospice Volunteer Coordinator.

The group of northern Michigan quilting enthusiasts comes together at the Hospice of Little Traverse Bay Hiland Cottage every Wednesday from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m., October through June. The Quilters created 110 quilts and 60 lap quilts during the 2016-2017 season – a record for the group!

“Our quilters contribute hundreds of hours making quilts for our patients,” said Siler. “We are fortunate to have such a dedicated group of volunteers, many who have been with us since the Hiland Cottage opened its doors nearly 10 years ago.”

Whether you are a novice or expert, the group is looking for more volunteers to join in the camaraderie, support, and laughter. The group would be especially grateful for the support of volunteers who have access to a long-arm sewing machine.

The HOLTB Quilting Guild receives generous support from the Women’s Club and donors to the McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation. The Quilting Guild also accepts donations of cotton fabric which can be dropped off at the Hiland Cottage.
