Welcome to the McLaren Macomb General Surgery Residency page. We are a 5-year ACGME accredited program. Our program graduated its first surgery resident in 1951. Our hospital began as an osteopathic training program and in 2018 transitioned to ACGME accreditation. Since that time, we have trained both MD and DO surgeons.
At McLaren Macomb, you will be exposed to a wide variety of surgical pathology in addition to standard general surgery procedures in both the elective and emergency setting. This includes open and laparoscopic hernia repairs, perforated ulcers, bowel obstructions, appendicitis, and cholecystitis. Our hospital has a busy bariatric service where residents will be exposed to minimally invasive gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy cases. Our graduating seniors are proficient in open, laparoscopic, as well as robotic approaches to general surgery procedures. The residency program also covers multiple vascular surgeons, providing the residents with many opportunities for endovascular and open vascular procedures in addition to bedside procedures. Our residents become proficient in central line, arterial line, and hemodialysis catheter placement. In addition to vascular and general surgery coverage, this program provides residents with opportunities to participate in plastic surgery cases.
Mclaren Macomb Hospital is a large volume Level II Trauma Center, with a majority of trauma activations for blunt trauma. Our trauma service is led by residents under the guidance of a trauma attending. Junior residents will have the opportunity to run and manage the trauma service. Our close relationships with our neurosurgeons and interventional radiologists have given our residents a unique opportunity to scrub and assist in these cases, such as craniotomy/ burr holes and splenic embolizations.
In addition to cases at the McLaren Macomb primary training site, residents cover the surgical services at McLaren Oakland in Pontiac, Michigan as well. One resident from the PGY2 and 3 classes will cover this hospital. Each resident will get a total of 4-5 months. With no senior residents on service, this is where you have the opportunity to be the primary surgical resident during cases. We cover trauma, general surgery, colorectal, cardiothoracic, and vascular at this location. There is a very high volume of penetrating and blunt trauma. From ED thoracotomies to trauma exploratory laparotomies, our residents gain incredible surgical training and confidence early on.
Other rotations include Trauma and Acute Care Surgery at Hurley Medical Center in Flint, Michigan; Pediatric Surgery at Detroit Medical Center Children's Hospital, and Transplant Surgery at University of Michigan.
Another highlight of the program includes our General and Vascular Surgery Clinic, which offers junior and senior residents the chance to evaluate patients in the clinic setting, work up their pathology, as well as participate in their operative management. This also allows for residents to work collaboratively with the excellent office staff of the clinic.
While many residents choose to go into practice upon graduation, others have successfully pursued fellowship in a wide variety of fields including: Vascular Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Surgical Critical Care, and Hand Surgery. On this page, you can find where some of our recent graduates have gone. Thank you for your interest in our program. We look forward to reviewing your application!
