Internal Medicine Residency - McLaren Bay Region

Parul Sud, MD joined McLaren Health Care in 1992 as a core faculty of the internal medicine residency program. She served as the director of ambulatory education and associate program director until 2017, when she was promoted to program director.

Dr. Sud spent over six years leading the program to the many achievements we have come to recognize as our “reputation” amongst candidates, including outstanding scholarly work, quality improvement, and inter-professional collaboration.

Her leadership led the IM teams through the covid pandemic and fundamentally changed how we trained our residents academically as well as how we trained and cared for our patients clinically.

In addition, she was critical in the development of fellowship programs in cardiovascular disease, interventional cardiology, and pulmonary and critical care medicine.

She is excited to build a new Internal Medicine residency program at McLaren Bay Region and create strong interprofessional working relationships with our providers and staff.

Why did you become a doctor? From a young age, I was fascinated by the intricacies of the human anatomy. I was inspired by physicians' ability to alleviate patients' ailments. That is why I decided to study medicine.

Why do you like working with patients? My favorite parts about working with patients are getting to know them and assisting them on their journey to care for their bodies. I enjoy collaborating to develop treatment plans that meet their individual needs.

Hobbies: I cherish spending time with my family and friends, being active, going to a nice café, and shopping.

Why did you become a doctor? I've had a deep love for biology since childhood and admired how medicine can combine being a scientist and a humanitarian. It’s not a regular 9 to 5 job, it’s part of your identity.

Why do you like working with patients? You get to make a connection with your patients, make them feel at ease, and you learn a lot from your patients by seeing things from their perspective.

Hobbies: Spending time with my friends and family, exploring cities, and having a good meal are all things I enjoy.

Why did you become a doctor? I've always been fascinated by the human body and driven to help others. Volunteering in underserved communities solidified my decision to pursue medicine, as I witnessed the transformative power of compassionate healthcare. Why do you like working with patients? My favorite parts about working with patients are building meaningful relationships and understanding their unique stories. I find it incredibly rewarding to support them through their health journeys and contribute to their well-being.

Hobbies: I'm a huge sports fan. I love watching NBA and NHL games—go Lakers and Canucks! Then, if the weather is nice, I enjoy exploring outdoor hikes and trails. I also love spending quality time with my family, whether it's having a cozy dinner together or planning fun weekend outings.

Why I want to become a doctor: I want to become a doctor because I find great fulfillment in solving problems and improving people’s lives through direct action. Medicine challenges me intellectually and emotionally, and it offers a unique way to combine science with compassion. I’m motivated by the opportunity to continuously learn, grow, and work in a team to provide care that truly matters. Ultimately, being a doctor allows me to make a positive difference every day, and that is deeply meaningful to me.

Why want to work with patient: I like working with patients because it feels meaningful to be there for someone when they’re sick, scared, or unsure. Just listening, explaining things clearly, or giving the right treatment can really change how a person feels. I enjoy building trust and seeing the impact of small moments—like a smile, a thank you, or even just knowing I helped ease someone’s pain.

Hobbies: Outside of medicine, I enjoy cooking, travelling and listening to music. These hobbies help me relax and maintain balance in my life.

Why did you become a doctor? I saw the tears of joy in patients hugging my father for finally making them better. I also saw the distressed faces of families knowing their loved ones will be gone soon. I wanted to be this person who would help them go through their pains and joys. I wanted to be a reason for hearts to heal. And I'm ready to give up so much for that, as I have already done.

Why do you like working with patients? Working with patients makes you more human. At the same time, you're sharper at communication. I must see through their eyes and relate. Every patient has a different story and perspective on life; I learn from them!

Hobbies: I love poems, reading them and writing them. Baking desserts on a weekend and having them with my family. I love walking and biking outdoors and swimming in the sea. Riding on a horse and feeding it makes me fly lol. Spending time with my family is the most precious thing for me.

Why did you become a doctor? My father who is a Rheumatologist, is the reason I chose this path with all my heart. Seeing his strength, resilience, and compassion inspired me to pursue a career in medicine, where I can make a difference in people's lives just like he has made a difference in mine. Why do you like working with patients? Working with patients is incredibly rewarding. Seeing the direct impact of my care, connecting with their stories, and making a difference in their lives brings me profound joy. Building trust, offering support, and celebrating milestones with them is truly fulfilling.

Hobbies: I'm passionate about exploring the great outdoors through hiking and traveling. There's something about being surrounded by nature whether it's watching the stars, spending time at the beach, or hiking in the mountains that brings me peace and joy.

Why did you become a doctor? Seeing a loved one navigate through a difficult illness when I was young opened my eyes to the fragility of health and the power of medicine. That experience sparked a deep curiosity about disease and the human body, which soon grew into a passion for science. What truly drew me to medicine, however, was the ability to turn that knowledge into meaningful action. To comfort, to heal, and to make a real difference in people’s lives. This combination of purpose and intellect is what inspired me to become a doctor.

Why do you like working with patients? As a doctor, what I value most is the connection I build with my patients. Being there for someone in their most vulnerable moments, offering both medical care and emotional support, is a responsibility I hold with great respect. Connecting with them on a human level while helping them heal gives me a deep sense of purpose and fulfillment. In seeing their resilience and vulnerability, I am constantly reminded of my own strengths and limitations, and it inspires me to grow both personally and professionally.

Hobbies: Being Indian, cricket runs in my veins—it’s more than a sport to me; it’s a passion. I enjoy playing pickleball and badminton too. I relish hiking, trekking, and spending quality time with friends.
