Most insurances cover diabetes education classes and private pay options are also available.
What to bring with you:
- A list of your current medications, including insulin doses
- Your blood sugar log and your glucose meter
- Your health insurance card and driver's license.
Helpful class information
- A friend or family member may attend with you as a guest without charge.
- We may be performing a foot exam. You may find it easier to wear slip-on shoes.
- We may be checking your blood pressure and blood sugar at class. You do not need to fast for the blood sugar check.
Group classes may last three hours, however, we do take a break in the middle. We suggest a meal or snack before coming to class to prevent a long delay in eating.
Topics covered in the diabetes self-care education series include:
- Diabetes diagnosis and progression;
- Meal planning and carbohydrate counting;
- Understanding your blood sugar numbers;
- Preventing complications;
- Stress management;
- Goal setting.
Classes are available for:
- Gestational diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy);
- Administering insulin and other injectible medications;
- Individual sessions arranged by appointment.
Flint's Diabetes Self-Care Education Program is certified by the Association of Diabetes Care and Education Specialists (ADCES).
